It’s a beautiful Wednesday morning, and I woke up early to attend the 1 Million Cups event in Fayetteville, GA. Every Wednesday, we gather at the Bus Barn at Line Creek Brewing Co. One Million Cups is an organization that educates, inspires, and connects entrepreneurs nationwide every Wednesday morning. They provide coffee and donuts, creating a fantastic place to connect with like-minded individuals.
As I walked into the venue, I greeted familiar faces and said hello. As the event began, I noticed a new face sitting quietly beside another man. They were talking softly, and I realized it was their first time attending. The man seemed very quiet and serene, so I decided to introduce myself and share what we do.
The Story Unfolds
Despite his initial hesitation, the man eventually shared his name with me. He then showed me a bracelet he was wearing and asked if I knew what it was made of. I guessed plastic, as that’s common for bracelets. To my surprise, he revealed that the bracelet was actually made from paper—specifically, torn pages. This unique detail intrigued me and added depth to our conversation.
I expressed my surprise at the idea of a paper bracelet and mentioned how the term “torn pages” intrigued me. As we continued to talk, the man pointed out a part of the bracelet that appeared to be made of silver. He asked if I knew what the material was, and I admitted that I didn’t. He explained that although it looked like silver, it was actually made from the inner lining of a potato chip bag—the part that is typically silver in color. I was amazed to learn that this beautiful bracelet was not only made from paper but also incorporated repurposed packaging material, showcasing creativity and resourcefulness.
An Unexpected Turn
My interest in the bracelet and its story grew as the man began to explain why he used such unconventional materials. He told me that he made the bracelet while in prison, where there were many restrictions. Inside the prison cell, inmates were not allowed to have most items, and only paper or soft plastic materials were approved. Throughout his travels, Jay met his ex-wife, but his addictions also led to a spiritual decline. After leaving the Navy, he found himself fighting for the Yakuza in Japan. During this tumultuous period, Jay had two beautiful children and even became a man of the cloth. Eventually, Jay spent 20 years in prison. It was during this time that God revealed a plan for him: to stay sober, help others suffering from addiction, and share the gift of hope, peace, and strength. It was a challenging and life-changing experience for him. From the confines of his prison cell, he reflected on his time in prison, he noticed that everything was gray—devoid of colors—which led him to contemplate various aspects of his life. In search of solace and meaning, he began creating with his hands, using paper and the unexpected material of potato chip packaging. It was through this process that the bracelet came to be.
