A Brief History of Georgia Archives
Established on August 20, 1918, the Georgia Archives was the result of the tireless efforts of its first director, Lucian Lamar Knight. Initially housed in the State Capitol Building, the Archives moved to its current location at 5800 Jonesboro Road in Morrow in 2003. In 2013, the Georgia Archives was transferred from the Georgia Secretary of State to the Board of Regents.
Over the years, the Georgia Archives has evolved, adapting to the changing needs of the state and its people. The Archives is committed to identifying, collecting, managing, preserving, and providing access to records and information about Georgia and its people. The facility offers assistance to state and local government agencies with their records management.

The experience was made even more enriching by attending talks from two esteemed individuals in the field of Georgia’s history and genealogy. We had the privilege of listening to Mr. Robert “Bob” Davis, an expert in Georgia genealogy and history, with over 2000 publications since 1974. His talk on “Research at Georgia Archives and Libraries” provided us with valuable insights into the vast resources available at these institutions for uncovering the stories of our ancestors.
We were captivated by Ms. Robin Klemm’s presentation on “Research and Resources at the Archives.” Her extensive knowledge of the archives’ collections and resources emphasized the importance of preserving and accessing historical records to understand our past better.
Attending these talks allowed us to appreciate the immense wealth of knowledge housed within the Georgia Archives and the dedicated individuals who work tirelessly to preserve and share Georgia’s rich history. We left feeling inspired and committed to contributing to this important work through our video biographies.
